Iran opposes Turkish incursion into Iraq Print E-mail

Iran expressed its unease with a possible cross-border operation into northern Iraq by the Turkish military, daily Milliyet reported yesterday. “A military operation will create new justification for the invaders and this could have very negative affects”, Isfendiar Rahim Mesai, the Iranian vice president said in an interview.

Government discusses cross-border operations ahead of elections Print E-mail

The government yesterday discussed whether to convene Parliament to authorize the military to conduct a cross-border operation before the elections, amid increased warnings against an incursion from the United States and Iraq. Condoleezza Rice, U.S. Secretary of State Friday called her Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gül to convince him that any unilateral action will frustrate Turkey's allies.

The United States needs to step up efforts to prevent Kurdish terrorists from conducting cross-border attacks on Turkey from Iraq, U.S. and Turkish officials said. The issue has taken on greater urgency as Kurdish terrorists have escalated attacks in Turkey and provoked Turkish threats to launch a military incursion into Iraq, a move that could have serious implications for U.S. efforts to stabilize Iraq.
