Iraqi foreign minister warns Turkey: 

Any military incursion by Turkey into northern Iraq will undermine Iraq's sole haven of stability and is in nobody's interest, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari warned on Sunday. Speaking on CNN from New York Zebari, himself a Kurd, echoed Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki in arguing that the Baghdad government wanted to halt the operations of PKK terrorists operating out of N. Iraq.

Maliki expected in Ankara for talks on PKK Print E-mail

Iraqi PM Maliki is expected to arrive in Ankara amid rising worries on both sides over moves that can further destabilize the region. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is expected to arrive in Ankara for talks on the fight against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists upon an invitation by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, diplomatic sources said yesterday. Turkey's Ambassador to Iraq Derya Kanbay handed Erdoğan's message to Maliki over the weekend. Diplomatic sources said the visit may occur in the first week of July rather than the end of June.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said he is still awaiting a response to his letter sent to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki inviting him to Ankara to discuss ways of cooperation in the fight against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists located in northern Iraq, in an interview with the private CNN Türk over the weekend.

The United States signaled on Thursday that it did not back Turkish intentions to set up a narrow buffer zone inside Iraq to bolster defenses against infiltration into Turkey by terrorists from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), but U.S. remarks fell short of an outright rejection of the idea.

Efforts are under way to somehow create a ‘belt of security’ on the Iraqi border amid calls at home for a cross-border operation into northern Iraq in the face of escalating PKK attacks. The Turkish military is planning to halt deadly attacks by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists through boosted security measures on the Iraqi border, a move apparently aimed at downplaying increasing calls inside for a cross-border offensive into northern Iraq to quash the group's bases.
