The United States and Turkey are not getting along very well lately.  Everyone knows that we have many issues to solve before going back to the honeymoon days.  Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is a major concern for Turkey but not for the U.S.; Iraq is a war to be won for the U.S., but not for the Turkish Republic. The U.S. administration and the Turkish government are not talking in the same tune.  But this may change in November 2008.

Kissinger sees that Turkey’s concerns about PKK are just and legitimate. However, he believes, a military intervention in northern Iraq is not the ‘formula’ of prevention; that even will result in Turkey being trapped in Iraq and this does not suit for interests of not only the U.S. but also Turkey. I approached Henry Kissinger before he started his speech and I said, “I heard in the news just minutes ago; you told CNN-Türk that a military operation in northern Iraq by Turkey is wrong.” He replied, “I understand Turkey's concerns but I am a friend of Turkey and I expressed my opinion sincerely.”

The secularists want to make Erdoğan out to be Washington’s lackey, so he is going out of his way to disprove this. This is why he is also taking a hard line now on the issue of Northern Iraq, and ties with the US. Relations between Turkey and its key ally of over 50 years standing continue to get worse as the uncertainty surrounding Iraq grows, and the PKK reaps benefits from this. The latest incident, in which the Turkish General Staff announced to the public through its web page that two US fighter jets had violated Turkish airspace, goes to show the level that the tension has reached.

"Mission incursion-into-Iraq" would be tantamount to "mission whoever-dares-loses"; hence its pointless. No doubt, an incursion is part of the military plan against Kurdish terror, but only one of several dozens of different contingency plans on that matter. Its "visibility" is disproportionate with its "possibility." Of course, the most predictable thing about military affairs, especially in this part of the world, is their unpredictability. But the odds are against an incursion – and luckily so.
