The Basque militant group ETA's decision to declared a permanent cease-fire once again shows that the Europe's decades-old terrorist groups are coming closer to an end. The Irish Republican Army (IRA), National Front for the Liberation of Corsica (NFLN), the Red Army Faction, November 17 or the Red Brigades, all known for their activities since the '70s, are now becoming mainly pieces of history.

The PKK is a Kurdish and separatist terrorist organization. The US and EU laws say that it is a terrorist organization. According to the British MI5 reports, it is one of the bloodiest terrorist organizations. It means that there is no difference between Al Qaeda and the PKK before the Western legal system.

On November 13, the Italian police arrested Abdullah Ocalan, founder and leader of the Kurdish Worker’s Party (PKK) at Rome’s airport. He had just arrived from Moscow with a false passport and, upon arrest, asked for political asylum. Coming at a time when British authorities are detaining former Chilean president Augusto Pinochet, who stands accused by a Spanish judge of terrorism and genocide, the arrest of Ocalan on an outstanding warrant issued in Turkey promises to raise significant questions about European politics, international legal standards, and the very possibility of cooperation in combating terrorism.

A fugitive on the run, his desperate bid for sanctuary being turned down by several nations before an end that may not have been the ideal script for Hollywood.
