Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin confirmed Friday that an additional facility would be built at Imrali prison to house five or six prisoners to keep Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of terror organization PKK, company as he serves out his life sentence. "We are planning to build a Crime Execution Institution, in which five or six more prisoners could stay," Sahin was quoted by Dogan News Agency as telling reporters.

"We also began to construct new buildings in Imrali Island, in which the security officials would be accommodated; because the old ones are not adequate for them," he added.

Hurriyet Daily News print edition reported on Friday that additional inmates may be brought to keep the terrorist leader company.  From the day he was captured, Turkish security authorities decided to keep Ocalan in a secluded place with limited access. A special prison was built on Imrali with the purpose of keeping him isolated from supporters.   Since his early days of incarceration, Ocalan’s detention conditions have been under close international scrutiny. The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CTP), which operates under the Council of Europe of which Turkey is a founding member, has visited Imrali four times. The last visit took place in May 2007, just after PKK supporters claimed Ocalan had been poisoned. According to the CTP report, made public by the consent of Turkey, the clinical examination did not reveal any sign of intoxication. However, the CTP has warned the government that Ocalan’s isolation is seriously harming his mental health.
