A mayor in the southeast of the country was sentenced yesterday to 15 months in jail for urging support for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, in an interview with a French news channel last year. The court in Diyarbakır convicted Ahmet Ertak Ğ the mayor of nearby Şırnak and member of pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party, or DTP Ğ under a provision penalizing propaganda for outlawed groups. In the 2007 interview with France-24, Ertak had said the PKK, who are waging a separatist campaign against Ankara, "should be supported as the PKK supported the Kurdish people."

His lawyer said they would appeal the sentence. The PKK, considered a terrorist organization by Ankara and much of the international community, picked up arms for self-rule in the southeast in a conflict that has claimed some 44,000 lives.

The DTP is currently facing a possible ban by the constitutional court for links with PKK rebels. The party, which urges a peaceful resolution to the violent conflict in the southeast, denies the allegations.

Three soldiers and four PKK members were killed in separate clashes in the southeast, the Anatolia news agency said late Wednesday.

One major was killed and five soldiers were wounded in a clash in eastern Van province Wednesday. In another clash near the town of Lice, north of the southeastern city of Diyarbakır, killed two soldiers and four members of the PKK, also Wednesday. It says four soldiers were also wounded in that clash.
